Tom Philpott is a fellow of the Open Markets Program at New America and writes for Mother Jones Magazine, maintaining the Food for Thought blog and writing features and op-eds, as well as speaking and publishing widely on the politics and economics of food and agriculture. His award-winning work includes a 2015 Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism for the story “California Goes Nuts.” In 2014, Philpott’s column was named “Best Food Blog” by the Association of Food Journalists, and in 2013 he got a Maggie Award. In 2011, Utne Reader named him one of "25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World," and in 2008, Food & Wine named Philpott one of "ten innovators" who "will continue to shape the culinary consciousness of our country for the next 30 years."
In 2017, Philpott was again short-listed by the Association of Food Journalists for his Mother Jones story, “How Factory Farms Play Chicken With Antibiotics,” in the category of Best Story on Food Policy or Food Issues.
